Spring ‘21 One Room Challenge
This room is what I would call, the sin of omission. I just haven’t shared it. I kept it a hot mess for a little bit of time and I cut it out of photos and it certainly isn’t on YouTube but this month - I’m putting it out there.
Last year, I participated in the One Room Challenge and virtually redesigned my bathroom. This time, I am focusing on my office, but for real. This space has been a mess and I literally can’t get work done in it. The desk is no longer my style and the mirrored top prevents my mouse from working when I’m trying to design. The iMac is ancient and I don’t use it for anything so it’s just taking up space. It’s a storage for all kinds of things including my daughter’s remote control car but not my clients samples which is what I need there.
Do you have a space like that in your house? What are you waiting for? Let’s tackle this together. This week, identify the space and the function and we’ll redesign it around that.
The function of my office is for me to Design/Sketch/CAD, Video calls/meeting, Film Youtube videos and store client samples. That means, I am starting by cleaning and removing everything that doesn’t serve that purpose. Next up, I will discuss how I design for function. More about this on my YouTube channel. Videos about the One Room Channel premiering this Thursday, May 14th.
If you’re doing this with me, let me know! There are so many other wonderful people involved, you can follow their journey here.
Warm Regards,

Week Five :: One Room Challenge
Week Five of the One Room Challenge - Green Shareen Design
Welcome to week 5 and things are REAL, aren’t they? This week is a continuation of my One Room Challenge! I’m a guest participant in this challenge transforming my bathroom in our rental apartment over a 6 week period. I’ve been including updates to this project in each video over the last 4 videos so you can keep up with the changes.
This week I’ve begun the final renderings for bathroom. With COVID-19, the challenge can be completed and submitted digitally. If you’d like to see what an install day looks like check out my YouTube channel here.
I’ve also shared on my instagram the black-owned touch. In this project, it’s the toilet paper. Reel Paper is a black-owned toilet paper company that makes plastic-free, bamboo paper and also gives back. I tried them for the first time this month and I literally (and figuratively) feel so good about their product. I encourage you to check them out.
Next week: The Big Reveal
Thank you for your support and be sure to check out the other participants and their transformations here.

The Halfway mark!
There are few times that I consider myself a maximalist. At the halfway point of a project, I order EVERYTHING and throw my all into it and make sure to get across the finish line. That’s where I am at the moment.
And the medal? It’s one of 3 that my husband has earned so far. I’m extremely proud of him. He has taught me quite a bit about that very important finish line.
I’m considering what the virtual rendering will look like now that I have everything in. I ran into a snafu with the towel bar. The towel bar is the correct length but the screws didn’t line up. Luckily, I purchase multiple items so I have a back up option. The towel hooks are in but I am considering using paper towels instead of a cloth towel for hand drying. A few tips for making this bathroom appear larger are the decals. I chose oversized decals and a misconception is that you’d want a small motif in a small bathroom. It’s quite the contrary. Go big or go home! Lastly, taking the shower curtain to the ceiling. Don’t get hung up on the 72” shower curtains. If you have tiles ceilings like I do, show it off by drawing the eye up.
To follow along the journey for before and after and all of the decisions along the way be sure to watch my Youtube Channel where I post every Thursday.
Feel free to check out others that are participating in this challenge with me here.
Ok that’s it for this week, see you next week. Thanks for reading.
A Green Shareen Design in progress...
Week Three :: One Room Challenge
Week 3 of the One Room Challenge - Green Shareen Design
The One Room Challenge is an incredible opportunity for designers to showcase their skills under pressure. We are given six short weeks to transform the space of our choice. I chose our 'everything' bathroom. In NYC, space is limited so this bath is powder, guest, master, utility, etc.
Last week I showed you the mood board to illustrate the aesthetic that I am going for. To follow along the journey for before and after and all of the decisions along the way be sure to watch my Youtube Channel where I post every Thursday. This weeks video, you see me do a bit of DIY.
Feel free to check out others that are participating in this challenge with me here.
The big reveal is happening on Nov 22nd and I'd love to see you there. Thank you for all of your love and support.

Week Two :: One Room Challenge
Week Two:: One Room Challenge
The last week went by so quickly! I worked on establishing my budget, deciding on my mood board and picking a color scheme. I plan those things out with my client BEFORE we start shopping. This way you have a clear vision to guide your design decisions as your project progresses. One of the biggest design mistakes that I see involves clients rushing to purchase and thereby usually spending more time correct mistakes, not to mention more money.
The mood I’m going for is artistic, creative and abstract. I like to have fun with bathrooms and include a classy wallpaper. In this case, I am going to have a ball with exploring some wall decals to create the wallpaper design that I would like and place it where I want to. You’re going to get a creative idea from this inspirational design.
I also have quite a few functions that we’re going to accomplish in this bathroom. Creating a functional design goes hand in hand with creating an aesthetically pleasing one. I tackled the challenge of toilet paper storage, towel storage, hair care, make-up, and more uses for this space in my latest YouTube video here.
I’m really excited about this opportunity to be a guest participant in the Fall 2020 One Room Challenge. I am going to be transforming the bathroom in our rental apartment. I’d love to have you follow the journey on my Youtube channel (Green Shareen Design) for even more details and I’ll be posting on my blog over the next 5 weeks, as well. I post videos every Thursday and will provide an update to the challenge weekly.
Also, please check out some of my colleagues and new friends that are featured participants by visiting www.oneroomchallenge.com/orc-blog. I’m humbled to be among these talented people and can’t wait to show you what we come up with!
